Let’s Hold CES 2021 in ‘Fortnite’

Yvasa/Shutterstock.comA couple of weeks ago, the CTA sent me a questionnaire about what they could do to make me feel safe at CES 2021, which by the way is totally happening in Las Vegas in January. That seems optimistic at best and dangerously aspirational at worst. I have an alternative: let’s all play Fortnite. The CTA survey indicated that the Association seriously wants the Consumer Electronics Show to happen despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and isn’t ready to start thinking about canceling it or moving it online. (Or at least, it’s not ready to indicate that thinking publicly.) A bevy of questions asks whether attendees would be comfortable with air travel, whether mandatory masks and social distancing would be enough, and whether submitting pre-show health screenings or on-site rapid...

This CPSC’s 2020 Fireworks Safety Video Is like a Wacky 1980s Montage

U.S. Consumer Product Safety CommissionLook, fireworks safety is important and we really do hope you make it to next week with all your fingers. But if you don’t, at least wear a GoPro like these fireworks crash test dummies. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) really wants you to have a safe 4th of July. To that end, they just released a safety video showing you just how wrong things can go when you mishandle fireworks. And while fireworks safety is serious business the resulting video—thanks to a sort of low-key campiness combined with the absolutely fantastic 1980s synth music—ends up looking more like a montage from Flight of the Navigator mixed with explosives and less like a safety video. But hey, maybe that’s part of the genius—because we’ll be damned if we...

Facebook’s Lasso, a TikTok Clone, Meets Its Maker on July 10th

deepstock/ShutterstockFacebook is putting down Lasso on July 10th, according to notifications received by its users. Lasso, a blatant TikTok ripoff, failed to break into the mainstream and has less than 100,000 daily users in some markets. But Facebook still plans to launch Instagram Reels, another take on the TikTok format. Like TikTok, Lasso allows users to shoot 15-second videos with popular songs and visual effects. Users can tap through a feed of suggested videos or look up videos by hashtag. But despite Facebook’s vast marketing budget, Lasso never broke out of the Americas. My coworkers haven’t even heard of Lasso, and they write about technology every day! Anyway, Facebook’s next foray into the TikTok format is called Instagram Reels. Like Instagram Stories, Reels are integrated i...

Snapchat Says It Is No Longer Promoting Trump’s Account

Snapchat said Wednesday that is has stopped promoting President Donald Trump’s content on its “Discover” pages due to recent comments he has made about protesters demonstrating against racial inequality and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police. “We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover,” a spokesperson for the social media platform said in a statement to HuffPost. “Racial violence and injustice have no place in our society and we stand together with all who seek peace, love, equality, and justice in America.” Snapchat’s Discover platform highlights content from news organizations, production companies, and public figures. eBay Executives Sent Live Spiders, Roaches To Harass Couple, Feds Say

Six former eBay Inc. employees have been charged with waging an extensive campaign to terrorize and intimidate the editor and publisher of an online newsletter with threats and disturbing deliveries to their home, including live spiders and cockroaches, federal authorities said Monday. Executives were upset about the newsletter’s coverage, so their employees set out to ruin the lives of the couple who ran the website, sending a funeral wreath, bloody pig face Halloween mask and other alarming items to their home, authorities said. The employees also sent pornographic magazines with the husband’s name on it to their neighbor’s house and planned to break into the couple’s garage to install a GPS device on their car, officials said. “This was a determined, systematic effort by senior employe...

The cheap Xbox Series S sounds more exciting with every new leak

New Xbox Series S rumors make the more affordable 2020 Xbox console sound more exciting than ever. The cheap Series S would be able to deliver incredible performance in a more compact package than the Series X, according to a former PlayStation executive. The Series S could be priced much lower than the PlayStation 5, a previous rumor said. The rumored Xbox Lockhart, the cheaper version of the Series X, seems closer than ever, as Microsoft is expected to unveil the device in the coming weeks. The console has been featured in several rumors so far, but the newest leaks make it sound like a great bargain. One of the most exciting Xbox Series S rumors said the console could cost just $200. The pricing structure is still up in the air and dependent on how Sony will price its two PS...

AT&T 5G service extends to 28 more cities across 14 states, plus Puerto Rico

AT&T 5G service has now gone live in a further 28 US cities and counties. The carrier says that this takes its 5G coverage to a total of 355 markets, reaching 179 million people … One of the ways it has done this is using a technology known as dynamic spectrum sharing. In parts of some markets, AT&T has enabled dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology which allows carriers to share the same channel between both 4G and 5G users simultaneously, based on demand, creating a seamless experience for customers.  Through DSS, AT&T can deploy 5G faster and more efficiently to help more customers take advantage of 5G technology, sooner. This technology helps create an intelligent and robust network for customers. “DSS is an important steppingstone on our path to nationwide 5G,” ...

iOS 14 exposes LinkedIn app reading users’ clipboards in background, company says it’s a bug

We recently covered that TikTok was caught reading users’ clipboards on iPhone and iPad thanks to the new privacy features of iOS 14. This week, iOS 14 users also noticed that the LinkedIn app is copying and pasting from the clipboard in the background for no apparent reason, which raised some concerns. iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 includes a new banner alert that lets users know if an app is pasting from the clipboard, which is part of a series of new privacy features Apple is adding to its operating systems this year. This particular clipboard feature is already exposing the behavior of some popular apps like TikTok, AccuWeather, AliExpress, and now LinkedIn. You can see the LinkedIn app pasting from the clipboard content every time a key is pressed in a video shared on Twitter by user @...

Apple wants your iPhone to replace your passport and driver’s license

The next step in Apple's goal of making the iPhone the sole thing anyone has to carry, continues with the device being able to securely replace passports, driver's licenses, and other physical forms of identification. Apple most recently announced a plan to rid the world of car keys, but the iPhone has already made us forget what it's like to carry diaries, cameras, pens, and even mirrors. Now the company is focusing on getting rid of passports — plus library cards, ski passes, and ID cards in general. A series of slightly different patent applications, all entitled "Providing Verified Claims of User Identity," detail methods by which a user's ID can be recorded or transmitted — and confirmed. Apple does not use the word iPhone once, but instead refers hundreds of times to devices that c...
